Black Music Month Luminary: Tye Tribbett

Tyrone “Tye” Tribbett was born on January 26, 1976 in Camden, New Jersey, and was raised in an Apostolic Pentecostal church. His father is pastor and his mother Neicy is a minister and well known as co-host of The Hezekiah Walker Show. He is married to Shanté Tribbett, who was a member of Greater Anointing, and they have two daughters together. Tye also has a brother, Thaddaeus, who is part of the band ‘Soundcheck’ and is now the current bassist for artist Estelle. Tye also has two sisters; one sister, DeMaris, also sang in Greater Anointing.

Tye has two Top 10 hits on the Billboard Gospel Charts; Greater Than peaked at # 9 in 2013 and his current hit, Work It Out, currently is #5.

Tribbett has won two Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Song 2013 He Did It Before (Same God) and Best Gospel Album 2013 for Greater Than. Tribbett has a total of seven Grammy nominations.

Before launching his gospel career, Tribbett toured and recorded as a background vocalist with such artists as Faith Hill, Will Smith, Usher, Don Henley, Justin Timberlake, and Sting.
